How To Repair Holes In Knitting
Tuesday Tip – How to Ready a Pigsty In Your Knitting
I love mistakes. I love fixing mistakes. In Knitting ER I go over all the fundamentals. Only sometimes there are things that go beyond the standard (that's where Advanced Knitting Fixes comes in).
I've written in by Tuesday Tips nearly Swiss Darning for a repair, and duplicate sew together for reinforcement.
Today I turn my attention to a larger repair, a multi row repair, in other words . . .
How to Gear up a HOLE in Your Knitting
Recently I was on a text thread with three friends. We were chatting when all of a sudden this text came through:
- No
- No, no, no
That was followed by another more colorful language, and an explanation that when she was cut a box open (that independent a sweater), she made a cut in the sweater.
I pulled out a swatch, fabricated a cut and started to accept photos and so I could send her some "how to" photos, only my pal had a improve idea. She would transport information technology to me to fix.
And so . . . as long as I was fixing the hole, I took a few photos for all of you. Since I had too taken some close ups of my swatch, I'm adding those too. I outset saw this technique done with a crochet claw in Rena Crockett'southward Flawless Knit Repair. If it's a modest hole like this, I similar to practice it with a tapestry needle.
Since duplicate stitch is easier from the stockinette side, I turned the piece around to piece of work from the wrong side
Notice that you volition have i more loop on the lesser of the hole and then the tiptop. I have a 3 stitch by iii row hole. I have 3 full loops on the bottom, ii loops with one/ii loop on either side of the two.
Here's a shot of the swatch that shows a nice clean hole ready to repair. I've pinned the cut yarn out of the way and then I'chiliad fix to build my ladder.
At present a scrap of thin crochet cotton wool to the rescue. Since yous tin can't duplicate run up over air, you can build a ladder to climb. Weave the crochet cotton horizontally to lock it in, and then create iii row "stitches". Outset by making the indistinguishable stitch ladder a few stitches before the hole, when you get to the pigsty:
- Insert the crochet cotton back to front through the bottom loop
- Insert it Upward through the first whole run up on the right side of the bottom, Down through the ane/2 stitch on peak, Upward through the next sew together on the upper level. Brand sure that you don't pull the thread besides tight. Apply a ruler to check the space.
- Continue to create indistinguishable stitch ladders through the hole and into the next few existent stitches on the left side of the pigsty.
Here are a few more shots from my teaching swatch.
Okay, dorsum to the real sweater . . . thread your existent yarn on a tapestry needle and start creating duplicate stitch a few stitches before the hole. Once you get the pigsty, you lot will exist able to enter dorsum to front through bottom loop, and so loop around ladder and the back where you came from on the bottom loop and into the next stitch
After y'all create row #1 of stitches, adjust the tension earlier making your anchor duplicate sittches in the fabric to the left of the hole. Repeat for each row.
When you get to the last row, you volition now be entering the stitches above the hole.
Once you lot've finished the material, y'all tin advisedly choice out the crochet cotton.
Finally, it's time to weave in the ends of your cutting yarn besides as new yarn you lot added. In guild to avoid a lump, you lot can weave in the ends on a diagonal in all dissimilar directions. Skim the ends correct through the stitches by splitting the plys.
Turn effectually to come across the lovely consequence . . .
